Injured Police Dog Rico

It is too bad Rico was hurt in a training exercise but I truly hope the good people of Petaluma step forward and donate to cover the expense of his medical care. He has served our community well.

I couldn't agree more. Maybe Mike Harris with his huge war chest could come to the plate with a large cash contribution if he really cares about Petaluma. Or how about Matt Maguire, Paul Francis and Janice Cader Thompson kicking down with some of the money they extorted from the shopping centers that we need here in town.

Don't the costs get covered by the police dept's insurance?

I'd guess that, like most public agencies, they're probably self-insured. An independent insurance adjuster will review the expenses, but the money to pay the bills will come out of PPD's budget, or directly from the city out of a contingency fund of some sort.

there is no insurance and Rico does not qualify for workers compensation. It would be an unbudgeted expense that would have to be paid. It will take away from something else.

Is that true Mongoose?

I ask because they have insurance on cars, office equipment, people, etc. and wonder why they wouldn't on the dog?

I obviously don't know for sure that's why I'm asking.

It is true. with the type of situations these dogs are in I am sure that even if there was insurance available it would be cost prohibitive. But there is no insurance on the dog for sure.
